Frequently Asked Questions
In an effort to ensure a smooth start to the upcoming school year we have compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions. The Student-Parent Handbook contains the information listed below, as well as the answers to other questions you may have.
Q: Why can’t my student carry his/her backpack during the school day?
A: Students are allowed to bring a backpack to school but it must be placed in his/her locker
before 1st period and left there until the end of the school day. Students are issued a set of
textbooks to be left at home for homework purposes, therefore, they have no need for a
backpack as they will only carry a binder or notebook throughout the day.
Q: Why does my student have to carry an ID at school?
A: District policy states that all secondary students will wear an ID card at all times when at
school. We allow students to have their ID on their person to present to any staff member when asked. These are checked every morning as our students enter the school grounds as a safety measure to ensure that only Corbett Junior High School students are on campus at all times.
Q: Why was my student’s cell phone taken up by the teacher?
A: District policy prohibits the use of cell phones and pagers from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM on
school grounds. “Junior High and High School students shall be allowed to possess such devices; however, such devices MUST NOT BE VISIBLE AND MUST REMAIN TURNED OFF during the instructional school day.” Be assured that your student will be allowed to contact you via school phone in the case of illness, emergency, etc. School board policy also permits the collection of $15.00 for the return of the cell phone to the parent. Here at Corbett we have elected to issue a warning letter the first time a cell phone is picked up. The parent must come to the Vice Principal’s office to sign the warning letter and pick up the cell phone. The second time the cell phone is taken up the student
must pay the $15.00 to have it returned.
Q: The bus driver allows my student to listen to her IPOD/MP3 player on the school bus.
Why won’t the school allow her to have it?
A: All electronic devices such as CD players, IPOD players, Game Boys, etc. are not permitted
on school campus as they pose a disruption in the classroom as student’s attention is drawn
away from instruction and learning or can be stolen.
Q: Why was my daughter not permitted to wear the shorts, skirt and/or top I purchased
for her?
A: The Student-Parent Handbook provides guidelines regarding dress and grooming for students.
When a student is deemed to be wearing inappropriate dress for school the Vice Principal will
provide the student an opportunity to change into appropriate clothing without discipline
consequences. If a change of clothes can not be brought to the student, or the student
refuses the change of cloths provided by the school, the student will be sent to In School
Suspension for the rest of the school day.
Q: My son’s jacket was taken from his locker? How could this have happened?
A: Our students are to keep a lock on their locker at all time. The extra key or combination is to
be given to the Vice Principal who keeps them in a secure location throughout the year. We
have found that one of four things has occurred in a situation such as this. The student has
given their combination to a friend, left the combination on the back of the lock, is sharing a
locker with a friend or has not properly closed the lock AND turned the combination dial.
