SCUCISD saddened by loss of Herb Rehmann
March 17, 2008
Herb Rehmann, a former administrator and the namesake of the Auxiliary Services Complex at Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD (SCUCISD), died Sunday. Rehmann, 75, was a life-long educator in SCUCISD and San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD).
Rehmann was born in Round Top, Texas, to Henry and Meta Rehmann on September 14, 1932. His father was a blacksmith and his mother was a housewife.
He graduated from Round Top Carmine High School in May 1950. Herb has always been a hard worker and had to work his way through college. He lost his father at the age of seventeen. During the summer, he worked for a construction company building bridges and worked with his uncle building houses. During the winter months, he would cut cordwood, sell it, and deliver it for $8.00 a cord.
Rehmann received his bachelor’s degree in January 1954 and his master’s degree in 1957 from Texas State University (then called Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College) in industrial arts. While at Texas State, he was a member of the ROTC and a member of Epsilon Pi Tau Industrial Fraternity.
In addition to construction work, Rehmann ran a drive-in movie theater on the weekends where he met his future wife, June Ponfick. The young couple married on June 5, 1955.
After they were married, Rehmann started remodeling and building homes in the evenings and on Saturdays. In addition to teaching over the years, Rehmann has built many beautiful houses.
He started teaching Industrial Arts at Burbank High School in September 1954, for $3,300 a year. He remained at Burbank until 1966. While at Burbank, he served on the Board of Directors of the Texas Industrial Arts Association and was responsible for much of the grass-roots study that led to the new Industrial Technology programs that now exist in Texas.
In 1966, Herb transferred to the new Portwood Junior High School where he developed the General Shop concept in the Industrial Arts Department.
From 1969-1975, Rehmann was at Highlands High School in San Antonio where he served as Dean of the Business and Technical Department and Dean of Boys.
In 1975, the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District welcomed Herb Rehmann as the new vice principal of O. Henry Middle School, now known as Ray D. Corbett Jr. High School. After serving as principal of the school, Rehmann was asked to lead the district’s Auxiliary Services Department.
As the head of Auxiliary Services, Rehmann proudly presided over the construction and expansion of SCUCISD campuses, offices, and facilities. During this time, he helped the district acquire more than $100 million worth of bond money for improvements and growth.
Rehmann retired from SCUCISD in 2000 after 46 years as an educator and administrator. On December 18, 2002, SCUCISD honored Rehmann for his years of service by dedicating the Herb Rehmann Auxiliary Services Complex, located at 1056 Elbel Road in Schertz, Texas, in his name. (Source: Speech prepared by Anna Timberlake for Herb Rehmann’s retirement in 2000)

ALSELC students donate hair to Locks of Love
September 12, 2007
locksoflove250pixels.jpg  Brian Selby (left), an eleventh grader, and Courtney Ansley (right), a twelfth grader, from Allison L. Steele Learning Center have graciously donated approximately 32 inches of their own hair to the Locks of Love Organization.
According to Jackie Day, the school’s secretary, Brian came to early registration with hair down past his shoulders. On the first day of school, he showed up with hair shaved close to his head. Out of curiosity, Ms. Day asked him what he did with his hair. He informed her that he had saved it in a plastic bag. Ms. Day then asked him if he would be interested in donating to Locks of Love. He agreed. A few days later he came in with his donation of approximately 20 inches of hair!
Later that week, Courtney came in to ALSELC with her long blonde hair reaching down her entire back.  Ms. Day asked Courtney if she would be interested in donating her hair to Locks of Love. She told Ms. Day that she was going to get a hair cut that weekend and would be interested in donating her hair to the organization. Courtney came back to school on Tuesday with approximately 12 inches of hair to donate to Locks of Love!
When asked why she was passionate about helping this organization, Ms. Day said, “It is something that needs to be done. It makes me feel better that the kids want to participate. It shows that they have compassion.”
"It is great to see these students haven't forgotten the value of helping others," she added.
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. For more information on this organization, visit www.locksoflove.org.
SCUCISD Police Chief issues statement on school safety
September 10, 2007
Dear SCUCISD Residents,

With the start of the new school year, I would like to take this opportunity to address the SCUCISD community on school safety and share some information that could be vital to the safety and welfare of our students.
An important national statistic concerning all child pedestrians, specifically between the ages of 5 and 9, shows them amongst our nation’s highest percentage of injuries/fatalities in traffic accidents. How can we prevent this? A simple, yet easy, way is to comply with the reduced-speed limits in school zones.
FACT: REDUCING YOUR SPEED BY AS LITTLE AS 5 MILES PER HOUR SAVES LIVES.
A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling 20 mph has a 5% mortality rate. However that jumps to 40% when the vehicle is traveling 30 mph! A speed of 40 mph increases the fatality rate to 80%. A huge increase! (Source: U.S.Department of Transportaion”, American School & University, July 2007 www.ASUMAG.com).
All school zones in the SCUCISD are 20 mph with the exception of Schertz elementary school, which is 15 mph.
I know that your concerns also go much further then traffic issues. Although it is impossible to eliminate all dangers, we must absorb lessons from tragedies that have befallen other locations. Please be assured that we have done that.
SCUCISD has expanded its training requirements for all of its officers and can assure you that the safety and welfare of every student, faculty member, and visitor is our priority.
We are here to serve you and will do everything to provide you the best service possible. If you have a concern, please feel free to contact me by phone at (210) 945-6190. We look forward to the start of another successful year for our District schools and providing the safest possible environment for everyone.

SCUCISD Board of Trustees approves 2007-08 budget, tax rate
August 29, 2007
The Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved the 2007-08 budget and the new tax rate on Aug. 28.
The Trustees approved a $83.6 million budget that includes a general fund balance of $70 million. The 2007-08 general fund is approximately $6.9 million or 11 percent higher than in 2006-07. This increase can be attributed to the district’s growth, increased property values, and high student attendance rates.
The newly approved tax rate dropped 29.5 cents from $1.61 in 2006-07 to $1.315 per $100 property valuation in 2007-08. This large drop is a direct result of the recent mandate created by the state legislature.
Under this new tax rate, the average SCUCISD homeowner will pay $1,807 in annual taxes on a home valued at $152,399. This is a tax decrease of $182 although the average cost of homes in the district increased $13,821 from last year.
According to Superintendent Dr. Belinda Pustka, the district is also pleased to report that the Interest & Sinking (I&S) portion of the tax rate will be increased less than originally proposed with the 2006 Bond Program. Since the 2005-06 budget year, the district has only increased the I&S by 5.5 cents rather than the full 10 cents originally projected.
