| TAYSHAS List Texas takes its name from a Caddo Indian word meaning 'friends or allies' (written 'Texas,' 'texios' 'teyas,' or 'tayshas') applied to the Caddos by the Spanish in eastern Texas, who regarded them as friends and allies against the Apaches." (Newcomb, W.W., Jr. The Indians of Texas: From Prehistoric to Modern Times. University of Texas Press, 1961.) The TAYSHAS List is chosen each year by the Young Adult Round Table of the Texas Library Association. It includes both fiction and nonfiction.
