Mr. Hermes claims to be 105 years old, which prompts many students to attempt to trap Mr. Hermes into some statement that will prove him to be much younger.
Mr. Hermes graduated from Texas State University (originally Texas Normal College) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Math. After graduation he worked as a research chemist for several years. After writing several computer programs to simplify the data treatment required in his research, he was transferred to the computer staff in the corporate main office. In this position he wrote many programs for the business functions of the company.
After a few job changes and promotions, Mr. Hermes found himself in charge of both the computer programming and operations and the accounting department of a chemical company in Houston. At this time he acquired a Master in Business Administration degree from the University of Houston. A period of several years of consulting and contract programming were ended by the founding of a retail store. The company prospered and grew for over 15 years when a major national competitor opened nearby. Bankruptcy followed for Mr. Hermes.
Mr. Hermes started teaching after a year of floundering and wishes now he had done so many years ago.
Mr. Hermes has always enjoyed science and especially astronomy. He bought his first telescope at the age of thirteen. He loves to share his enthusiasm with today's students. |
