Eighth Grade Pre-AP American History
2008-2009
Mr. Kelley
Bachelor of Science from Southwest Texas
Conference period is second period.
I. Course Description
The period of time we will be studying in American History is the establishment of Jamestown, Virginia in 1607 to the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War in 1877. Internet access is a helpful tool for any student in this class. I keep an up to date website with many PowerPoint’s, assignments, maps, Venn diagrams, and other useful information for parents and students.
II. Objectives
Students will gain a working knowledge and understanding of the important people, places and events that helped establish The United States of America.
III. Evaluation Criteria/ Testing
The Pre-AP student will be keeping an Interactive Notebook throughout the year for a major part of the student’s grade. This is where the student will keep their daily work including vocabulary assignments. The students work will reflect on-task behavior and an understanding of the content being covered. The content to be covered throughout the course is in preparation for the eighth grade Social Studies TAKS test near the end of the year.
IV. Grading Criteria
Grades will consist of the following:
All grades well are averaged. (they are not weighted)
Class Work and Home work count 1 time
Test Grades count 2 times
Large Projects count 5 times
V. Special Course Requirements
In order to be successful in this course the student must devote additional time to class projects, tests and homework assignments. Each student is required to participate in the Wax Museum project in May 2009.
VI. Make-up Policy
District policy will allow make-up work when students are absent. It is the responsibility of the student to ask for the work from the teacher and complete and return in a timely manner.
VII. Classroom Expectations - The Five “P’s”
Prior
Planning
Prevents
Poor
Performance
Coming to class unprepared will result in Pre-AP student falling behind and loss of individual instructional time and more homework for your child.
Unproductive behavior for an extended period of time will result in the student completing their assignment on their own time. This behavior may affect the final grade of the student for the class.
Should you have any questions you may contact me during my conference period at (210) 945-6350 or email me any time. You may leave me a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

The student will be assigned vocabulary throughout the year as a major part of the student’s grade. The reading study guide will be given to each student and is required to be completed for each chapter we cover. This is a great study guide for kids. Please encourage your kids to complete the assignments. Test corrections are to be completed by your child outside of class and must be turned in the day after your child gets the test back. The content to be covered throughout the course is in preparation for the eighth grade Social Studies TAKS test near the end of the year.
