LET'S MAKE THIS THE BEST YEAR EVER!

In both classes, all topics this past week were a review
of topics & methods taught in Algebra I.
Students should review class notes, correct their quizzes, and READ the book to make sure they understand how to solve a 2 variable system.
All classes will be assessed on Friday.  Because grades are due next Monday, test grades will not be posted until after verification.

Alg 2 HONORS students need to keep up with class work.  Students who elect to attend field trips or other school events are still responsible for the class work assigned.  Students who will be gone this Tuesday need to check the homework and come by my room to pick up any worksheets.  Just make sure to read your assignment and read your book in the event that you are absent from class.

On Mon. 10/20/08 I had a Re-Test for Linear Functions and Inequalities for my regular classes.  The last opportunity to retest will be this coming Friday morning at 8 a.m.

I will be inputting a few grades in this week that I needed to catch up with.
Just a reminder:  per the Policies and Procedures of this class late work is not accepted.

ALL HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE BY THE NEXT DAY UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED.

I will do all I can to direct and help you be successful in math, but remember that ultimately YOU are RESPONSIBLE for your own success.  We are here to accomplish two goals this year:        1.  Obtain an Algebra 2 credit                  2.  Pass the Exit Level TAKS
In order to perform our best, it is necessary that we have a learning environment that is positive, peaceful and enjoyable for all.

NOTE TO PARENTS:
PLEASE DISCUSS THE FOLLOWING CLASSROOM RULES WITH YOUR CHILD.
A SUCCESSFUL CLASSROOM REQUIRES THE COOPERATION OF ALL.
Classroom Rules:
·       Do  NOT  TALK  unless spoken to by the teacher.
·       Stay seated in your assigned desk from the beginning to the end of class.
·       Be Respectful and Kind to “all” people and items in the classroom.
·       Come Prepared and Participate appropriately.
·       Follow teacher’s directions at all times.

Tutorial  Help  on the Web
The goals for our classroom are twofold:
A.      obtain an Alg 2 credit
B.      pass exit level TAKS

Our textbook is an excellent resource for  help on line.  You can go to the website  go.hrw.com after you have received a password from me and see videos of lectures, take quizzes to check your comprehension, use a graphing calculator online and more.

An additional resourse to help you achieve these goals is a program called AGILEMIND.  It is now available for demonstrations, self-tutoring, reinforcement of concepts, and practice problems.  This program is available for use at home, or during the school day.  Visit the library or any available computer to practice the objective in which YOU  need to strengthen.  Agilemind is one of the resources I plan to use to help students remediate areas of weakness.

To find more practice problems, visit the TAKS webpage on the TEA website ( www.tea.state.tx.us ) or the UT website ( www.track.uttelecampus.org ).

Tutorial Hours
Monday  Wednesday  Friday
in my classroom from 8:20-8:35 AM.
By appointment I will also tutor during my 4th period lunchtime.
Tues. and Thurs from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.   On Thurs I can stay a little later.
Please do not wait until you are totally in the dark to ask for help!

The following supplies are not mandatory, but they would be appreciated:
                A box of tissues
Extra pencils (to supply the emergency box used on test days)

7 CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS
1. They take responsibility for the decisions that will shape their lives.
Responsibility involves being organized, meeting deadlines, and developing short-term goals and long-term goals.

2. They have found a purpose for their lives that is meaningful and motivating.
They believe there is a purpose. If their purpose is unclear they seek positive experiences until it becomes clear.

3. They are consistent in the pursuit of their goals.
They are focused but flexible and realistic. They realize that in the pursuit of one goal, new and better opportunities may emerge that produce new and better goals. They develop and prioritize several possible career goals.

4. They network with others that can help.
They become involved in campus activities, especially related to their goal. They seek out and become friends with teachers and others that provide strength, encouragement, and opportunities.

5. They enjoy learning.
They approach learning expecting to enjoy it. They plan to discover something meaningful in each class that can be used in their lives.

6. They have a positive attitude.
Their attitude and speech is positive and they associate with positive people. They view a problem as a challenge that may produce new opportunities. When they don’t feel positive, they fake it. They understand that success in life is largely determined by attitude and choices.

7. They believe in themselves.
They believe that good things are going to happen. “When I look at the future its so bright it burns my eyes,” Oprah Winfrey.

This will mark my 20th year in the classroom.  I want to make it a successful, wonderful year for all.

Parents:  I am very glad to be serving your child.  Please remind them to keep up with their work, ask questions in a timely manner, and to always remember to be polite and considerate.  I worked very hard last year to obtain very good TAKS scores and have a good passing rate for the Alg II credit.  My personal goal this year is to increase the TAKS passing rate to 100%  and  increase the number of students achieving commended status.  This can only be obtained if students do the work I ask, pay attention in class, allow others to perform at their best, have a positive attitude, and most of all, be polite and cooperative at all times.
