Skills for Living is a multi-media Consumer Science class where students explore nine different computer interactive "modules"  designed to learn real-life skills. Each module has seven days of related, cooperative, hands-on activities. Students will switch partners every eight days as they move from one work station to another throughout the semester. Below you will find a brief summary of module activities.

SYNERGY LEARNING MODULES:
1. Confident Consumer - evaluate sales and discounts; calculate the most economical way to purchase food and drinks for a party of 25; evaluate products based on strength and absorbency; compare cell phone plans.
2. Food Science - conduct food science experiements; write lab reports; identify pH of common foods; odor recognition;  study the six essential nutrients.
3. Fashion & Textiles - compare fabrics; design a textile pattern; take on the role of a wholesale buyer while working with an inventory spreadsheet; generate merchandising ideas to increase sales.
4. Heart Fitness - examine factors affecting heart fitness; characteristics of cardiovascular disease; monitor and record blood pressure and heart rate; draw EKG; diet analysis; create a health plan.
5. Life Skills - complete a personality profile; research stress, self-esteem, peer pressure, relationships; create a slide show about the issues facing teens using Powerpoint.
6. Microwave Cooking & Nutrition - compare microwave and traditional ovens; apply proper measuring techniques; identify parts of Food Pyramid; adjust recipes to reduce fat content; prepare simple recipes:  twice-baked potato, brocolli-cheese casserole, mini pizzas, cereal party mix, hot chocolate, baked apples; evaluate nutritional value in snacks; define standards for a noraml diet.
7. Personal Finanace - money  management using a budget; open a checking account, write checks, keep a check register;reconcile bank statement; loan application; compute the cost of making purhcases on credit.
8. Interior Design - study color coordination; principles of design; floor plans; create a remodeling budget using a price list.
9. Lab Manager - assist teacher with lab activities, distrbution of materials, errands; career investigation assignments.
