The Basics of Geography
Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4

Use your World Geography Textbook to answer the following questions.

Chapter 1 – Physical Geography: Looking at the Earth

1.      (Section 1)  What are the Five Themes of Geography?

2.      (Section 1)  Draw a circle representing the earth.  Label lines of latitude, lines of longitude, the equator, the prime meridian, and the north, south, east, and west hemispheres.

3.      (Section 1)  What are the formal regions of the world that you will be studying in this class?

4.      (Section 4)  Explain what GPS is and how can it be used.  See the photograph on page 13 “Movement.”

5.      (Geography Skills Handbook)  What is the difference between a physical map and a political map?

Chapter 2 – Physical Geography: A Living Planet

1.      (Section 1) What is a continent?  List the 7 continents of the earth.

2.      (Section 1)  What are the layers of the Earth?

3.      (Section 1)  Explain the continental drift theory.  See map on page 29.

4.      (Section 3)  Study the diagram on page 37 regarding tectonic plates and the Ring of Fire.  Answer the two questions.

5.      (Section 3)  Define earthquake, tsunami, and volcano.

6.      (Section 4)  What is the difference between mechanical and chemical weathering?

7.      (Section 4)  Define loess and humus.

Chapter 3 – Physical Geography: Climate and Vegetation

1.      (Section 1)  What is solstice and equinox?

2.      (Section 1)  See the diagram on page 52.  Based on the map, what states are most likely to have 7-9 tornadoes per year?

3.      (Section2)  See the diagram on page 56, “Climate Controls.”  Read and answer the 2 questions.  

4.      (Section 3)  What is the dominant climate along the equator in all continents?  See map on page 60-61.

5.      (Section 3)  Define tundra and permafrost.

Chapter 4 – Human Geography: People and Places

1.      (Section 1)  Define culture, ethnic group, and cultural hearth.

2.      (Section 1)  What is diffusion and acculturation?  Give an example of each that is different than the examples provided in the book.

3.      (Section 1)  What is the difference between monotheistic, polytheistic, and animistic?

4.      (Section 1)  Briefly explain the 5 major religions of the world.

5.      (Section 2)  See the “U.S. Population Pyramid” diagram on page 79.  Read the caption and answer the questions.

6.      (Section 2)  Explain why push and pull factors can affect migration.

7.      (Section 2)  Define Birth rate and population density.

8.      (Section 3)  Define and give an example of a landlocked country.

9.      (Section 5)  What is infrastructure?  Be sure to include examples in your definition.
