See the map of Southwest Asia on the following page. On your own copy of the map, label the following countries, landforms, cities, and physical features.
· Countries:
o Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey
· Territories:
o Palestine, Gaza Strip, Golan Heights, West Bank
· Mountains:
o Hindu Kush, Pontic Mountains, Elburz Mountains, Taurus Mountains, Zagros Mountains
· Rivers/Bodies of Water:
o Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, Strait of Hormez, Gulf of Suez, Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea, Persian Gulf, Mediterranean Sea, Dead Sea, Euphrates River, Tigris River, Jordan River, Sea of Galilee

After all labeling is complete, answer the following questions.

2. What country in this region consists of a long peninsula jutting out into the Persian Gulf? What is its capital?
3. What waterway forms a natural border between Israel and Jordan? Into which saltwater lake does it flow? What desert is located in southern Israel?
4. Which of the nations in this region is also an island located in the Mediterranean Sea? What is its capital?
5. What eastern country in this region is landlocked and located in the heart of Central Asia’s mountain belt? What country is located on its southern border?
6. In which modern country of this region is the “fertile crescent” formed by the junction of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers located? What is its capital?

4. (Section 2) How do sandy deserts and salt deserts differ from one another?
5. (Section 3) See the “Water Systems” on page 496. Explain Drip irrigation and Desalinization.
6. (Section 2) See the charts and maps discussing petroleum and oil pipelines on page 498. Answer the two questions that accompany the map.

3. (Section 1) What is the purpose of OPEC?
4. (Section 2) What is the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock? What city are they both located in? How could this cause conflict?
5. (Section 2) What is Zionism?
6. (Section 2) See the maps on page 512, “Creation of Israel.” Answer the two questions that accompany the maps.
7. (Section 3) Who are the Kurds? Why would one say they are a “stateless nation?” – see page 516 & 526.
8. (Section 3) What is the difference between Sunni and Shiite Muslims? You may need to look online to fully answer this question.
