AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS OF FRENCH FALL MEETING will be help September 13, 2008 at the McNay in San Antonio. Please go to the Chapter Homepage above for info. We hope to see you there!
Dear Teachers,
It has been my pleasure to help administer the National French Contest (Le Grand Concours) for the past three years. I have really especially enjoyed being of service to French teachers and helping to promote so positive an event as the National French Contest.
I am thrilled to say that we have now found a new administrator. Leannna Homsey, who teaches in the San Antonio area, has stepped up to take this very important task! We are delighted to welcome her, and of course I will work with her as needed this next year. However, she is a very capable teacher and organizer, and I am sure she will be "une amélioration sur la souche" (an improvement on the stock). (I'm hoping that might be the corrrect way to say it.) So, welcome, Leanna! You all will be hearing from her in the fall if not before. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions or comments, please forward them to me, and she and I will try to look at them together to see what can be improved!
The National French Contest is one of the most important activities of the American Association of Teachers of French. It gives opportunity for over 100,000 students of French throughout the U.S. and in American schools around the world to participate in a contest to see how well they do in French and to be recognized for their accomplishments. In our own area, we have some 1100 to 1400 students who participate!
Since the contest is not administered until the spring, teachers do not enroll their students until January. Many teachers like to obtain practice tests (actual tests from 2008 and prior) to practice with their students prior to that time. These are available through the national headquarters website:
Scroll down under Quoi de neuf? to the bullet that includes a link for review materials order form. (not sure why the h of http doesn't show up on my link, but it should be there!)
Again, please get photos (preferably digital) of National Winners to me as soon as possible so I can send them on to be published. These may be individual shots of your students who placed nationally or a picture of everyone together with their medals and you in the picture as well. Please be sure to indicate clearly on a separate document the names and levels of students as well as the school and teacher’s name.
THANKS (MILLE MERCIS!) for everything you do for French and the promotion of French in your schools and in your personal lives as well!
Rita McKee
