Don't you just love going to the beach? Sand between your toes, sailboats on the horizon, salt water swishing around in your mouth? I come from Galveston and Mrs. Adams is from Maine, so when you come to Speech, we will probably tell you a beach stories. We want to listen to your stories.
Speech is all about communication- speaking, listening, improving the message. Good communication takes effort and practice; coming to Speech gives you that practice. Will it help your school work? Yes, because you will have strong(er) word power and confidence for speaking and learning. Will it help with friends and family? Yes, because they will get a clearer message. Will it be painful??? Hopefully not. Any kind of improvement takes hard work and dedication, but no one says you have to take the fun out of it.
A typical week in Speech consists of one or two 30-minute sessions. In groups of no more than five, Speech-Language Goals are addressed while covering classroom and human interest topics. Drill, games and discussion make up the majority of our time together. Students can know their Speech schedule by reviewing their individualized student schedules.
The year at a glance is best viewed through IEPS or Individualized Education Plans. These documents prescribe which areas will be addressed for each student, as well as a criteria for mastery. Grades are not given in Speech class; instead progress is noted through updated IEPs every nine weeks. The IEPs are revised and approved at annual ARD meetings.
My wish list starts with good communication. Please feel free to contact me with your questions, compliments and/or concerns. My conference time is second period. Additionally, I can be reached by phone or e-mail. I will return messages by the end of the day they are received. I also have need of Speech prizes, which are given out to the kids at fixed and random intervals; anything simple yet fun is welcome. Finally, I am a big fan of Jordan's book fairs and would love to receive any of the items I put on the wish lists there.
About Mrs Peterson-
I became interested in Speech Pathology when a mentor/friend described the job which allowed her to teach, counsel, and work with families as a communication advocate. After a year at Concordia University in Austin, I studied at University of North Texas to get my BA in Communication Disorders. Immediately thereafter, I got my MA in Speech Language Pathology from The University of Texas in Austin. My first job was with NEISD. My husband, Greg, and I have two children who are both at SCUCISD schools. This year marks my second to return to Speech Pathology after taking time off to raise the kids.
On a personal note- I am especially aware of Galveston's beach this year, as many of my friends and relatives are working to return to normalcy after Hurricane Ike. Please keep the recovery efforts in your thoughts and prayers.
As for us...
Here's to this year's elite class of awesome communicators!!!
