Seizures

  • FIRST AID FOR GENERALIZED SEIZURES:

     

    v  SEND/CALL FOR CLINIC HELP AND NOTE THE TIME

     

    v  DO NOT put anything in the person’s mouth.

     

    v  Help the person into a lying position.  (Put something soft under the head to cushion and elevate).

     

    v  Turn the head or body to the side to allow saliva to drain from the mouth.

     

    v  Remove glasses and loosen any tight clothing (tie, scarf, etc.).

     

    v  Clear the area of hard or sharp objects.

     

    v  DO NOT restrain the person, you cannot stop the seizure nor should you attempt to.

     

    v  DO NOT give medication during a seizure.

     

    v  Clear the area of unnecessary individual’s (student/s, bystanders).  Respect the individual’s privacy.

     

    v  Reassure others present that the person will recover.

     

    v  Reassure the person upon awakening.

     

     

    CALL FOR EMS WHEN:

     

    v  Seizure lasts more than 5 minutes.

    v  No history of epilepsy/seizure disorder.

    v  Slow recovery, a second seizure, or difficulty breathing afterwards.

    v  Pregnancy or other medical conditions.

    v  Any signs of injury or illness.

     

    Individual’s who’ve had generalized seizures should be fully conscious and aware before being left on their own.  Make sure they know the date, where they are, where they’re going next (if age appropriate).
