STAAR/EOC Testing Requirements

  • The State of Texas requires all students to graduate having passed the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) End of Course (EOC) exams. Beginning with the Class of 2015 (9th graders during the 2011 – 12 academic year), students must pass with a Satisfactory score the five STAAR EOC exams in order to meet graduation requirements.

The state currently requires five EOC exams to graduate:
    1. English I
    2. English II
    3. Algebra I
    4. Biology
    5. US History

Beginning with the 2017-18 school year, the state revised the reporting categories for student scores.  Students' scores are now categorized as meeting one of four different levels.  The descriptions and minimum scores for each of these levels is given below.

MASTERS GRADE LEVEL Performance in this category indicates that students are expected to succeed in the next grade or course with little or no academic intervention. Students in this category demonstrate the ability to think critically and apply the assessed knowledge and skills in varied contexts, both familiar and unfamiliar.

    • English I = 4691 or greater
    • English II = 4831 or greater
    • Algebra I = 4333 or greater
    • Biology = 4576 or greater
    • US History = 4440 or greater

MEETS GRADE LEVEL Performance in this category indicates that students have a high likelihood of success in the next grade or course but may still need some short-term, targeted academic intervention. Students in this category generally demonstrate the ability to think critically and apply the assessed knowledge and skills in familiar contexts.

    • English I = 4000 - 4690
    • English II = 4000 - 4830
    • Algebra I = 4000 - 4332
    • Biology = 4000 - 4575
    • US History = 4000 - 4439

APPROACHES GRADE LEVEL Performance in this category indicates that students are likely to succeed in the next grade or course with targeted academic intervention. Students in this category generally demonstrate the ability to apply the assessed knowledge and skills in familiar contexts.

    • English I = 3775 - 3999
    • English II = 3775 - 3999
    • Algebra I = 3550 - 3999
    • Biology = 3550 - 3999
    • US History = 3550 - 3999

DID NOT MEET GRADE LEVEL Performance in this category indicates that students are unlikely to succeed in the next grade or course without significant, ongoing academic intervention. Students in this category do not demonstrate a sufficient understanding of the assessed knowledge and skills. Students scoring at this level will need to retest until they achieve a score which falls in one of the previous three levels.

    • English I = less than 3775
    • English II = less than 3775
    • Algebra I = less than 3550
    • Biology = less than 3550
    • US History = less than 3550
