Dress Code

  • Dress and Grooming (All Grade Levels)

    The district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:

    • Halter tops, exposed midriffs, strapless and/or low cut tops that expose breasts or cleavage, exposed backs, spaghetti straps and see-through clothing are not permitted. Undergarments shall not be visible or exposed.

    • Appropriate footwear is required. Footwear that has toes and/or soles reinforced with steel, hard plastic or similar materials is prohibited. Footwear with wheelsis prohibited.

    • Shorts, will be permitted provided that the shorts are neatly hemmed and must be no shorter than mid-thigh. Bicycle shorts, form fitting and skin-tight shorts or pants of spandex or other similar materials may be worn with a shirt that covers the bottom. Dresses, skirts, skorts and split-skirts will be permitted provided that they are no shorter than mid-thigh.

    • Pants shall be worn securely at the waist. Sagging, the practice of wearing extremely loose or baggy pants below the waist is prohibited. Oversized or long clothing is not permitted. Undergarments shall not be visible or exposed. Holes in jeans above the knee are prohibited. Leggings/jeggings/yoga pants, etc., must have an item of clothing worn over the material that covers the bottom when sitting and standing. Pajama pants of any type areprohibited.

    • All types of hats, forehead bands, bandanas, etc., are not permitted inside school. Caps may be worn outside of the building.

    • Hair must be clean and well groomed. Hair may not be a disruption to the learning environment.

    • Body piercing may not present a disruption to the learning environment.

    • Clothing and visible tattoos and similar body painting(s) that promote violence or reflect gang activity are prohibited. Clothing and visible tattoos and similar body painting(s) that are considered offensive, inflammatory or disruptive to the learning environment are prohibited. This prohibition includes, but is not limited to, inappropriate advertising or statements that are offensive or inflammatory, alcoholic beverages, profanity, sex, tobacco, drugs, gangs, guns and other weapons, excessively violent or gory imagery, and the promotion of violence and death.

    Because fads in dress and grooming are subject to sudden, and sometimes radical change, a basic rule to remember is that student dress and grooming should not be suggestive or indecent, or so bizarre and unusual as to be disruptive to the learning environment. Students who do not comply with the dress code after a warning will be subject to appropriate consequences.

    If the administrator determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student may be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
