How do I turn in a note for my child's absence?

We have many forms of communication on how to turn in a note to excuse your child's absence:

    • Complete an Absence Form Online
    • Fax the excuse to 210-619-4463
    • Have the child turn in the note to their teacher
    • Turn in the note to the Attendance Office or email bosorino@scuc.txed.net

Absence notes must include the student's first and last name, grade level, teacher's name and their student ID number (lunch number), the reason and date(s) for their absence(s), as well as a parent/guardian signature and contact information.

If you are turning in a medical excuse note note, please be sure to include the child's grade level, teacher's name and student ID number at the top of the note.

How many absences is my child allowed per semester?

A student is allowed 9 absences per semester (18 per school year) in order to meet the Compulsory Attendance Law (90%).  Absences over this amount may result in loss of credit and/or grade retention.

What is considered an excused absence?

SCUC ISD accepts the following as extenuating circumstances for the purpose of granting credit for a class:

    1. An excused absence based on students' personal illness.
    2. Death in the family.
    3. Documented health-care appointments, including absences for recognized services for students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
    4. Activities related to obtaining U.S. Citizenship
    5. Religious Holy Days.
    6. Required court appearances.

Vacations are not an acceptable cause for an excused absence from school.

For further information in regards to SCUC ISD Attendance Policy, you may refer to the district's Parent-Student Handbook.  If you have any questions, you may contact your child's teacher or contact the attendance office.

What is considered an unexcused absence?

When a student is absent from school, with or without knowledge and documentation of their parent/guardian for any reason other than those previously listed, it is an unexcused absence.  The following is a list of things that would be considered an unexcused in the case of a tardy or absence (This list is not exhaustive):

    • Over sleeping
    • Missed Bus
    • Car Trouble
    • Trips with Parents
    • Baby-sitting
    • Extended Vacations
    • Out of Town

When is an absence considered unexcused?

An absence is considered unexcused when a note is not provided within 3 days of returning from the absence.

When is my child considered tardy?

The tardy bell rings at 7:30 AM.  Students will be counted tardy starting at 7:30 AM.  A student is allowed 2 unexcused tardies per 9 weeks.  3 Unexcused tardies will result in a Truancy Warning Letter for Administration.

Do I need to sign my child in if they are late/tardy?

Yes, any child that is coming in at or after the 7:30 Tardy Bell must be accompanied by a Parent/Guardian and signed in.
