o Screenings will also be conducted on all 7th grade girls and all 8th grade boys during the fall semester.
o The procedure for screening is simple. Screeners (district nurses) who have been specially trained will look at your child’s back while he/she stands and then bends forward. For this examination, boys and girls will be seen separately and individually.
o ALL STUDENTS MUST REMOVE THEIR SHIRT FOR THIS EXAM. FOR THIS REASON, WE REQUEST THAT GIRLS WEAR A HALTER TOP, TUBE TOP, SPORTS BRA, OR A TWO-PIECE SWIMSUIT TOP UNDERNEATH THEIR SHIRT ON EXAM DAY.
o Parents will be notified of the results of the screening only if professional follow-up is necessary. This screening procedure does not replace your child’s need for regular health care checkups.
o According to state law, girls will be screened two times, once at age 10 (or fall semester of grade 5) and once again at age 12 (or fall semester of grade 7). Boys will be screened one time at age 13 or 14 (or fall semester of grade 8). To meet this requirement, your child must either be screened by a trained screener, the school nurse, or by the child’s physician. Privacy is maintained while screening students in the school setting. If you choose to have your child examined by his/her physician, results of the exam must be received by the school nurse. Thank you for your cooperation.
