Schoology Expectations and Guidelines

  •

To provide students and parents consistency and continuous access to assignments, resources, feedback and communication, SCUC ISD uses the Schoology learning management system (LMS). Learn more about why Schoology is the district’s LMS here.

SCUC teachers and administrators will use Schoology throughout the year as an instructional and communication tool. Examples of teacher and administrator use of Schoology are available here

    Grades PreK-4

The intent of this tool is to connect home to school and engage parents in an interactive way. Training teachers will continue in the effective use of Schoology. Teachers are encouraged to begin/continue posting resources for parents and students in Schoology.

Examples include, but are not limited to:

    • Interactive quizzes
    • Teacher created instructional videos to support deeper learning
    • Choice boards for students
    • Additional examples are available here

Additional features will be implemented in the future.

    Grades 5-6

Teachers and students will continue to be trained in the effective use of Schoology, with the expectation to begin posting assignments and resources during the second grading period. The posting of assignments and resources will be fully implemented in grades 5-6 at the beginning third grading period of the 2021-2022 school year.

Examples include, but are not limited to:

    • Interactive quizzes
    • Teacher created instructional videos to support deeper learning
    • Choice boards for students
    • Additional examples are available here

Additional features will be implemented in the future.

    Grades 7-8

Teachers and students will continue to be trained in the effective use of Schoology. Teachers will continue/begin to post assignments and any available resources essential to student learning. The Schoology parent portal will be available to parents beginning the second grading period.

Teachers and students will continue to be trained in the effective use of Schoology. Teachers will continue to post assignments and any available resources essential to student learning. The Schoology parent portal will be available to parents beginning the second grading period. Dual Credit and Dual Enrollment courses (OnRamps) will not use schoology. These classes will use the Learning Management System that the college they are connected to uses. Currently that is Canvas.

    Secondary - Grades 7-12

Once students have been trained and the parent portal opens, there will be two options for submitting assignments:

    • Paper
    • Electronic

Examples of assignments could include, but are not limited to:

    • Discussion Boards
    • Essays
    • Research
    • Additional examples are available here

District and campus staff will continue to establish timelines for implementing additional Schoology features at all levels. Features may vary based on grade levels.

    Communication

Our goal is to reduce the number of different communication tools between our parents, teachers and students; therefore, during the 2021-2022 school year, we encourage teachers to begin transitioning their communication from various platforms into Schoology.

Currently for 2021-2022, communication about classroom activities, courses, feedback, assignments, (examples of each are available here) etc. to students and parents will be through Schoology. Schoology will become the primary platform for teacher communication with parents and students beginning the 2022-2023 school year.

Extracurricular clubs and organizations may continue to use other instant messaging platforms as a communication tool for announcements, reminders, etc. in accordance with district policy DH (R1)

Elementary and Intermediate teachers may continue to use Class DoJo for communication with parents throughout the 2021-2022 school year.

    Teacher Webpages

Schoology teacher profiles will replace teacher webpages. Teachers will update their profile information according to the Schoology Profile Requirements before the first day of instruction.  Teachers will send  the campus webmaster the link to their Schoology profile page. Profiles will be linked to the campus websites by Friday, September 17, 2021.

How Schoology Supports Students Who are Unable to Attend Class or are Absent

Schoology provides accessibility to coursework in the event of an absence from school whether due to illness or extracurricular activities by (attendance guidelines apply per the student handbook):

    • Access to assignments and resources
    • Communication to/with teachers and peers
    • Opportunities to complete assignments

As stated in our district Grading Guidelines (PreK-6 pg. 8  and 7-12 pg. 7 ):

    • Students are allowed two school days for every day of class missed for make-up work
    • After a prolonged absence, the teacher may exempt a student from an assignment if the teacher determines that doing so will not have a negative impact on the student's ability to master the content or unfairly bias his/her grade.

Unlike remote learning last year, students who are not present in class, on-campus will be marked as absent. Students are expected to complete all assignments provided by the teacher and compulsory attendance laws and 90% attendance remain in effect for credit in all classes. The completion of work does not count as present for attendance purposes.
