    Athletics Class Supplies: 

    • Dobie Athletics T-Shirt/Black Shorts 
    • Athletic shoes
    • Paper and pencil will be needed periodically. Coaches will let classes know when supplies need to be brought.

    Athletics Class Facts:

    • Label all belongings. Clothing can be similar and sometimes misplaced. Names on clothing and shoes helps clear up any confusion.
    • Yes, we dress out every day. Athletics will start the first day of school.
    • Doctor notes are needed for injuries and illnesses.
    • No, your child is not forced to shower.  Showers are available for students. Towels and toiletries are not provided. Students must provide any needed shower necessities.
    • Jewelry (to include stud earrings) is not allowed to be worn while participating in class. Points will be deducted if worn. We do not want students to get hurt and this can/may happen if jewelry is on.

    Athletics Information

    • Are there specific sport web pages? Yes, look to your left and then just need to click on the desired sport. 
    • What is on the web pages?  Practice schedules, game schedules, directions, coaches email information, and much more can be found here. 
    • How do we compare to other schools?  We have a STAC website which contains all up to date information on our conference’s standings, records, schools information, and much more. 

    PHYSICALS: 

    • Does my child have to have a physical? Yes, all athletes must have an up-to-date physical to be allowed to participate in the athletic class, athletic practice, tryout, or game. The Dobie coaches must have this physical on file. See the Dobie athletic website for a physical to print and take to your doctor. Please hold onto your child’s physical and turn it into a coach. DO NOT TURN YOUR PHYSICAL INTO THE OFFICE PERSONNEL!!!! It is suggested that parents make an additional copy of their child’s physical.
    • I can’t get my child’s physical until _________. Is that too late to tryout? Once tryouts are completed, students will not be allowed to tryout unless permission was given by the coach. Please speak with the coach directly if this is your situation.
    • Does the district give physicals? Yes, on one day in the spring.  More information will be sent home about this once the date has been finalized.  Steele and Clemens will offer sports physicals for $15. More information will be available in April. Please see the Steele or Clemens website for dates and times.

    ATHLETICS CLASS:

    • Does my child have to be in athletics to try-out for volleyball, basketball, and/or soccer?  No, but your child may get moved into athletics if they make the team.
    • My child wants to play football and is not in athletics. What should I do? Any boy that wants to play football must be in the athletic class. See the counselor if your child’s schedule needs to be changed.
    • My child doesn’t want to be in athletics but is. What should we do? Please contact the counselor as soon as possible so arrangements can be made to get your child out of athletics and into another elective.
    • What do you do in athletics?  In athletics we do a variety of conditioning activities to include; weights, agility, sprints, distance, and also specific sport training.   Please realize that the athletics class is not for everyone. It is designed for athletes and those that want to play sports and continue on with sports in high school. It is definitely challenging and demanding.
    • My daughter is a cheerleader, does she have to be in athletics?  Please direct all cheerleading questions to the sponsor.
    • What class period is athletics? 7th grade girls are 2nd period. 8th grade girls are 7th period. 7th grade boys are 3rd period and 8th grade boys are 4th period.
    • Does Dobie provide clothes for athletics? Yes, T-shirt/short can be purchased through myschoolbucks.com
    • What about shoes? Shoes are not provided.  Please buy your child good running shoes to wear daily in athletics. Specific sport shoes are recommended but not required.
    • Does my child need a lock? Yes, a combination lock is required to lock up all valuables in the locker room.
    • Why can’t my child use a key lock?  Keys get lost or locked up in lockers!!!! Also, students do not have a safe place to keep keys while in class and/or practice.  If a key is lost, coaches have to cut the lock. Coaches will not be responsible for keys. Combinations do get forgotten but are easily attainable from the coaches that keep all kids combinations.
    • Do they have to shower in athletics? This is optional and up to the athlete. Time is given to shower and dress for class.
    • How long do they have to get ready for class in first period athletics? Athletes are given approximately 10 minutes to dress before the bell rings.

    ATHLETIC DAY

    • What is it? This is a day the coaches have designated for the incoming athletes to come up and meet the coaches, turn in physicals. Football athletes will be issued their equipment, and girls trying out for volleyball will be put on the list. Combination locks must be provided to get a locker.
    • When is it? TBA
    • What should we bring?  Please bring your physical packet (if you haven’t turned it in) and a combination lock!!! Boys WILL NOT BE ISSUED any football equipment if they do not bring a combination lock to the Athletic Day. 
    • I can’t attend athletic day, so what should I do? All lockers and football equipment will be issued as soon as possible once school starts, either during athletics or during practices. An alternate day and/or time will not be given to those who can’t attend. 

    TRY-OUTS

    • Where do I pick up/drop off my child? Parents, please be on time and pick up your child at the parking lot by the football field.
    • My child is just wanting to try-out for a sport, do they need a physical?  Yes, any student wanting to try-out for a sport must have a physical on file with the Dobie coaches to participate in tryouts. 
    • Do you have to be in athletics to try-out for a sport?  No, any student that wants to try-out for volleyball, basketball, soccer, track, and/or tennis does not have to be in athletics. 
    • Can parents come and watch try-outs?  No, tryouts are closed to parents, family, and friends.

    PRACTICES

    • All sport practice schedules can be found on the Dobie school website under athletics.
    • What do they have to wear in practice?  For athletics, all athletes must dress out daily in athletic clothes. Black, white, and gray must be worn at all times. Dobie, or Steele shirts are allowed. Dress code still applies in athletics. No cut-offs, tanks, spaghetti straps, or too short shorts are allowed.
    • Where do I pick up/drop off my child? Parents, please be on time and pick up your child at the parking lot by the football field.
    • Will my child have to make up practice if missed? This decision is up to the coach. Please have your child discuss this reason with the coachPractice must be made up before the next game or playing time may be affected. Athletes that are on the team are expected to be at every practice. Parents are asked to schedule appointments around our practice times.

    GAMES/TOURNAMENTS

    • When are games, meets, and/or matches? Dates and times will be given when information has been finalized.
    • When are tournaments?  Dates and times will be given when information has been finalized.
    • Do they have to buy the team uniform? Uniforms for game play are provided by the school. The coaches will issue uniforms before the first game. Uniforms must be turned in after games to the coach. Any lost or damaged uniform must be paid for by the athlete.

    VOLLEYBALL

    • When are volleyball tryouts? 7th and 8th grade volleyball tryouts will start the second week of school. Parents you will need to pick up/drop off your child at the parking lot by the football field.  Tryout dates and times are posted on the volleyball website.  All girls interested must have a physical on file with the Dobie coaches to participate in tryouts. Tryouts are closed to parents, family, and friends.
    • What do coaches look for in tryouts?   Volleyball coaches look for ability, skill, athleticism, grades, and attitude for tryouts. Those with the highest overall scores will make the team. For both 7th and 8th grade, we have two teams, an A and a B team. Approximately 24 athletes make up the A and B teams. 
    • When is practice? Volleyball practices will starts once tryouts are completed. Practices will either be before school from 6:30-7:45 am or after school from 3:45-5:30. Practices are Monday, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and sometimes Fridays. Those that make the team are expected to be at every practice. Parents are asked to schedule appointments around our practice times.
    • Are there any summer camps for volleyball? Yes, the high school volleyball coaches will host a three day camp the end of July / beginning of August. See the Dobie Athletic and/or the Steele Athletic website for more information.

    FOOTBALL

    • When are the practices? 7th and 8th grade practices will be after school from 4-6.  Practice Calender will be posted on Website by the first day of school.
    • When will practices start?   TBA   
    • My child is on C Team, when is practice?  C Team may practice during athletic class time only. More information will be available in August on the Athletic and/or Football website.
    • Does football have tryouts? No, everyone makes one of the team three teams, either A, B, or C team.  
    • What do you look for when determining who is on A, B, or C team? The coaches will spend the first several days of practice evaluating the athletes in various ways and then the athletes will be placed on the appropriate team based on their skill level.
    • Are there any summer camps for football? Yes, the high school football coaches will host a four day camp the beginning of August. Refer to Steele HS website (student activities) for more information.  We strongly encourage your child to attend this football camp!

    CROSS COUNTRY

    • When will cross country start? Cross Country will start the second week of school. Coach will have a meeting sometime during the first week of school after school at 3:30 in her classroom to give more information out to interested students.       
    • My child only wants to do cross country. Should they be in athletics? No, cross country is practiced before and/or after school.
    • Are there tryouts for cross country?  No
    • When are meetsThe top athletes in each age group will go to the meets which are held on Saturdays. Start times for the meets will vary and be determined later.
    • When are the practices? Cross Country practice is before school from 6:45-8:00 and/or after school from 3:30-4:45. Practices are Mondays through Thursdays. Practices will start the second week of school. Practice dates and times will be finalized this summer.

    GIRLS BASKETBALL

    • When will girls basketball season start? Girls basketball will start late October. The season is November, December, and the first half of January.
    • When will tryouts be? Tryouts will be immediately after volleyball season has ended, which is typically late October.
    • What do you look for in tryouts?  Coaches evaluate the athlete’s abilities, skills, athleticism, grades, and attitude for tryouts. Those with the highest overall scores will make the team. We have three teams, an A and a B team for each grade and sport. We keep approximately 12 athletes for each team. C team consists of a mixure of 7th and 8th grade athletes. 
    • Do you have to be in athletics to tryout?  No, girls that want to tryout do not have to be in athletics. Tryouts are closed to parents, family, and friends.
    • When is practice? Basketball practices will starts once tryouts are completed. Practices will either be before school from 6:30-7:45 am or after school from 3:45-5:30. Practices are Monday, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and sometimes Fridays. Those that make the team are expected to be at every practice. Parents are asked to schedule appointments around our practice times. 
    • Are there any summer camps for basketball? Yes, the high school basketball coaches will host a four day camp the end of June. Dates and times have not been finalized. See the Dobie Athletic and/or the Steele Athletic website for more information.

    • When will practices be? Practices for 7th grade will be in the morning before school from 6:30-8:00am. 8th grade will practice after school from 3:30-5:00.

    TENNIS

    • When is tennis season? Tennis season is in March and April.
    • When are try-outs? Tryouts will be in January after school for both 7th and 8th grade boys and girls.
    • What do you look for in tryouts? Coaches evaluate athlete’s abilities, skills, athleticism, grades, and attitude for tryouts. Those with the highest overall scores will make the team. Approximately ten girls and ten boys are kept for each grade level.
    • When are the practices? Tennis practice is after school from 3:30-5:00. Practices are normally Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
    • When are the matches? Tennis matches are on Tuesdays at 4:30. The district tennis match is on a Saturday in April.
    • Are there any summer camps for tennis? Yes, the high school tennis coaches will host two camps sometime during the summer. Dates and times have not been finalized. See the Dobie Athletic, Steele Athletic, and/or the Clemens Athletic website for more information.

    TRACK

    • When will track start? Track will start the week before or after spring break.      
    • My child only wants to do track. Should they be in athletics? No, track is practiced after school.
    • Are there tryouts for track?  Yes, athletes are trying out for a spot in different events. We take the top three athletes for that week to the meet. It can change and be different for every track meet.        
    • What do you look for in tryouts?   Athletes come out to practice and are timed on different running distances, measured on how far and how high they can jump, how far they can throw a disc or a shot put, and if they can pole vault. The top five and/or six athletes for each event make the track team and attend weekly practices. Three athletes are picked weekly to attend weekly meet.
    • When are meets? Meets are held on Thursdays and start at 4:30.
    • When are the practices? Track practice is after school from 3:30-5:00. Practices are normally Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
