Stephen Barnwell named new Director of Technology

Stephen Barnwell has been named the new Director of Technology at SCUC ISD. Board Trustees approved the recommendation at the regular meeting held on September 19, 2023. Barnwell is currently the Enterprise Services Manager in the department, and has also held the position of Mobile Device Management.

“I am incredibly grateful to the SCUC district leadership for recommending and approving me,” Barnwell said. “This has been a long-term aspiration for my career and I consider it an honor to be selected.” 

Barnwell began his career in education technology with the Bethlehem Area School District in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania as a support technician. He moved to Texas in 2011 with his wife and began his career at a private school, broadening his horizons to learn how to mesh technology with education. Barnwell then moved to Lackland ISD before coming to SCUC in May of 2016. Along the way, he continued his professional development and obtained a nationally- recognized Certified Education Technology Leader (CETL) certification. 

“I will be leading a drive to remove as much overhead of technology concerns as possible from our teachers so they can achieve the true work of our school district,” Barnwell said. “Feedback from our stakeholders will steer these adjustments so that their daily practices can be student-focused.”

Barnwell is a native of Allentown, Pennsylvania. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Integrative Arts from Penn State University, and later obtained his Master of Arts in Ministry from Liberty University as part of his work at the faith-based private school and to familiarize himself with the service-oriented nature of technology in education. 

Barnwell is married to his wife, Ashley, and has a daughter, Brooke. He is also an avid Penn State football fan and hobbyist musician.
