Clemens HS senior receives flight school scholarship
Evan McWhirt, a senior-to-be at Samuel Clemens High School, has received a scholarship to attend the Spartan college of Aeronautics and Technology to take part in a Private Pilot Certificate training program later this summer.
McWhirt is one of only 200 Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) cadets around the world to receive the prestigious scholarship, which is valued at nearly $23,000. The award will cover transportation, room and board, academics and flight hours required to potentially earn a Private Pilot Certificate. Over 1300 AFJROTC cadets applied for the award nationwide.
The eight-week summer course, which will be held at partner universities, is an Air Force-level initiative in collaboration with the commercial aviation industry to address the national civilian and military pilot shortage. No military commitment is incurred by participating in the program, and completion of the course does not guarantee acceptance into one of the military’s commissioning programs.
The Samuel Clemens High School AFJROTC program is under the direction of Lt. Col Eric R. Bass (Retired), assisted by CMSgt Jeffrey Gideon (Retired), and SMSgt Catherine Butler, (Retired).
