Paschal ES student leads fight against Muscular Dystrophy
Five motorcyclists riding muscular Harley-Davidsons vroomed into the Paschal Elementary School gymnasium to help a second-grader fighting Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a muscle-wasting disease that progressively affects his ability to sit, stand, or walk and difficulties to speak.
Gaven Quirarte was joined by members of Mile Monsters Inc., endurance motorcycle riders from around the United States committed to raising both awareness and money to fight Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, as part of Monster Goat Day. Gaven’s classmates visited the gymnasium throughout the morning to hear the Mile Monsters describe the effects of the disease, but more importantly, to urge students to exhibit kindness to all.
Jeffrey Wyatt, nicknamed “Riot”, was the featured speaker. The New Jersey resident recounted how he was introduced to Gaven, and impressed with the second-grader’s artwork, traveled to Fort Worth to have him tattoo an image of a goat on his left arm. “Gaven is my hero,” said Wyatt. “He’s one of the reasons we ride from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, from Canada to Mexico and everywhere in between.” Some of his colleagues sported nicknames such as Big Daddy, Twister, and Ken Go Home.
Mile Monsters Inc. uses proceeds from donations to help meet needs of families affected by Duchenne, including special equipment or Hero Hauling vans to help them get around town.
