Steele HS is strong for Gridiron Heroes
It was more than just a game for bragging rights between the seniors and junior girls at Byron P. Steele High School when they took part in the school’s 15th annual Powderpuff flag football game on May 13, 2022.
The event, under the direction of TJ Mitchell, the school’s library aide, raised $3,061 for Gridiron Heroes, a San Antonio-area non-profit organization dedicated to providing resources and support to individuals sustaining a catastrophic spinal cord injury through activities associated with high school football.
The check donation was made to the organization on May 18th. Mitchell presented the check to Eddie Canales and his son, Chris Canales, who founded the organization after Chris suffered a severe vertebral fracture that left him paralyzed below his shoulders in 2001. Jana Cervantes, school principal; David Saenz, Knights head football coach; were joined by Cynthia Lira, Junior class sponsor; SSG Andrea Joseph, of the National Army Guard, one of the sponsors of the event for the presentation.
