18+ Transition teacher to run NYC Marathon to honor his students
Manny Olivo, Job Coach for the 18+ Program at the Marion Dolford Learning Center, has been selected to run in the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 7th. Olivo was chosen as part of the Team TCS Teachers Entry, submitting a short video explaining why he wanted to run in the prestigious event. He is only one of 50 educators nationwide taken for this honor.
Olivo stated his students in the 18+ program were his inspiration, along with the District’s Special Education program. The 18+ Adult Transition Program at SCUC ISD is designed to assist students with mild to moderate disabilities in making a smooth conversion from a school environment into adulthood. Students are provided multiple opportunities to learn and use the skills necessary to function as productive and independent citizens. “I take joy coming into work every day as each is different with our students,” Olivo said. “We all learn together on how we can adapt to our work environments.”
A lifelong runner, Olivo has run marathons in Tokyo and Alaska, to name a few. He recently returned from an ultramarathon in Oklahoma, which encompassed over 100 miles. His story will be chronicled by Fox 29 for broadcast on October 20th.
