School Based Health Center renamed to honor district Trustee
Methodist Healthcare Ministries officially renamed its facility located adjacent to Schertz Elementary School as the George Ricks School Based Health Center, honoring the longtime SCUC ISD Board Trustee, at a ceremony held on July 29th. Barbara Ricks and Michael Ricks, wife and son of George Ricks, respectively, were present at the event and assisted with the unveiling of the new sign bearing his name.
Ricks, who also served on the boards of the Methodist Healthcare System and Methodist Healthcare Ministries, strongly advocated the repurposing of the old Schertz Elementary School cafeteria as a Community-Based Health Center to meet the medical, dental and emotional needs of low-income children and children under the age of 21. The building was originally scheduled for demolition after a bond program built a new campus on the site in 2009.
“This clinic has provided much-needed health care to this community,” said David Pevoto, SCUC ISD Trustee and one of the speakers at dedication ceremony. “George Ricks was wise. George was quiet, but if he spoke, you listened.”
Ricks, who passed away in January of 2021, was hailed as a servant leader by Jaime Wesolowski, President & CEO of Methodist Healthcare Ministries. “His name is synonymous with our ministry and we’re here to honor the special ways he led,” he said. Bob Clark, Reverend at Schertz United Methodist Church, called Ricks, “...a truly distinctive man. He transformed the people around him and this facility.”
Mr. Pevoto was one of many current and former SCUC ISD officials who attended the ceremony. Dr. Clark Ealy, Superintendent of School, was joined by Letticia Sever, Assistant Secretary; and Gary Inmon, Trustee.
Dr. Belinda Pustka, who served as district Superintendent from 2003 through January of 2010, was also present, as well as former school board members Terry Hinze and Kenneth Ratcliff. Longtime band director and former Fine Arts Director Fran Badrak was also in the audience.
