SCUC ISD Masonry Days
Students at Byron P. Steele High School and Samuel Clemens High School got a glimpse into some of
construction trades with a two-day symposium about masonry, held at the Marion Dolford Learning
Center and Toby Connor Ag Barn on September 29th and 30th.
Laborers, masons and company representatives from various contracting firms in the area provided
classroom and hands-on training. Student attendees learned the jobsite tasks as well as knowledge and skills needed for a career in the industry. Currently, industry standards include $15-20 an hour for laborers, $18-24 an hour for apprentices, and up to $30 for masons.
Day one of hands-on instruction included the art of handling a trowel and spreading mud evenly and
efficiently to lay bricks. Laborers and masons were on hand to work individually with students. The
second day included a design and competition phase.
Special thank you Texas Masonry Council, Best Block, Meridian Brick and Masonry Supply, San Antonio Masonry, Contractors Association, Groesbeck Masonry, Inc, Spec Rents, and Shadrock and Williams Masonry.
