The following information will be helpful to you in finding out more about our SCUCISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC), and Coordinated School Health Programs (CSHP).
What is a SHAC?
In May 2001, the legislature passed Senate Bill 19. It requires each school district to implement a Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) and to establish a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) to make recommendations regarding that program. The SHAC must consist of at least 50% of parents of current students with the remainder comprised of school district staff.
These councils serve in an advisory capacity and do not have any legal responsibilities within the school system. The SHAC members must be approved by the school board, and comply with the written by-laws of the organization. Our SCUCISD SHAC is currently chaired by the Health Services Coordinator, and meets four times per year.
What is a CSHP?
This Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model is an expansion and update of the Coordinated School Health (CSH) approach. The WSCC model joins the components of CSH and the tenets of the whole child approach of the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD). This unification brings a strong collaborative approach to learning and health.
The WSCC model focuses its attention on the child, emphasizes a school-wide approach, and acknowledges learning, health, and the school as being a part and reflection of the local community.
