Samuel Clemens HS attains Purple Star Campus Designation

Samuel Clemens High School has been bestowed with the Purple Star Campus Designation, a special honor designed to recognize Texas school district and open-enrollment charter school campuses that show their support and commitment to meeting the unique needs of military-connected students and their families.

Clemens HS is one of only 106 campuses statewide to receive that distinction, and one of only 22 in the greater San Antonio-area. “I’m incredibly proud of our school,” said Amy Sirizzotti, Samuel Clemens High School principal. “We make great effort to make sure our military-related kids are taken care of and that they feel at home. We want them to feel included and part of our Clemens community while we have them.”

Ms. Sirizzotti praised assistant principal Terri Henry and MSTC Tina Barber for their work with the military connected students who through activities and constant communication with the Student 2 Student program help make Clemens HS students feel at home. She also cited Mr. Marc Anthony Thornton, Social Studies teacher and veteran, who also leads S2S in making students with family members in the military feel welcome. “It’s about kids who find themselves in a new school almost every year,” Sirizzotti said. “They have a connection here. It’s like a family within a family.”

Award-winning campuses must demonstrate through their TEA applications that they meet the criteria established:

1 – Designation of a campus-based military liaison.

2 – Creation and maintenance of an easily accessible web page that includes information for military-connected students and their families.

3 – A campus transition program

4 – Offered at least one of the following initiatives:

  • A resolution showing support for military-connected students and families;
  • Participation in Month of the Military Child or Military Family Month; or
  • Partnership with a school liaison officer to encourage and provide opportunities for active duty military members.

The Purple Star Designation is a special honor created by the 86th Texas Legislature through Senate Bill 1557 in 2019.
